Agreement Errors

The theme of the main sentence (after the comma) is “faces” (including “faces of Stacy`s friends”) which logically cannot be the subject of the first sentence. This disagreement creates a balanced clause. It must be the subject (of the whole sentence) who “looks down”, but we can conclude that it is Stacy who is at the top because her “faces of friends” were “smiling” at her. Subject-verb conformity errors occur when the author or spokesperson uses the plural form of a verb, when the subject requires the singular form, or when the singular form of a verb is used, then the subject calls the plural. “The subject does not match the verb” is an example of a subject-verb conformity error. They would say, “The subject is not in agreement with the verb.” Use your verb to find your subject, and then make sure you`ve used the appropriate verb for the subject to find errors in the subject-verb match. Bob is a singular noun of the third person, and therefore the verb (Drives) is singular. This harmony between the subject and the verb is called concordance. Many things can make the subject-verb agreement a bit difficult.

Here are three examples. The trick to looking for subject-verb disagreements is to identify the verb in a single sentence. The verb in the sentence will help you find the subject that will tell you if you have the correct form of the verb. The verb is the easiest to identify as a word that can come right after the pronouns “me”, “you”, “you” and “That”. In cases where two words can match the sentence depending on the pronoun, the verb is the word that changes when you change the temporal form of the sentence. For example, in the sentence “The exhausted runner has crossed the finish line”, both “exhausted” and “crossed” could come after a pronoun. If we change the sentence from the past to the present, “The exhausted runner crosses the finish line”, we see that because “cross” has been modified to put the sentence in the contemporary form, it is the verb. However, the same rules continue to apply to the agreement: subject-verb conformity errors occur in the English language when an author or spokesperson has not photographed the number (singular or plural) of the verb with the subject number of the sentence. It is not always easy to recognize a subject-verb disagreement due to the many exceptions to the rules of English, but some general guidelines will help the meticulous author find most errors. This sentence contains a subject-verb concordance error.

The theme of this sentence is singular: “the recent discovery”, although the subsequent elaboration of short films and a personal diary may be misleading, it does not change the grammatical theme of the sentence. Therefore, the verb should be “allowed”. Nothing makes amateur and un professional writing appear as fundamental sentence errors. This week we consider the errors in the pronoun-precursor concordance and the subject-verb agreement. It`s a matter of subject-verb agreement in this independent clause: “The overall security of the city has improved significantly since it was hired.” To simplify, the subject is “security”,” which is a singular noun, so the verb must be also singular, which “improved” hurts and “improved” the corrected verb…
