We are a quarter of the way through 2011 already, here to keep you up to speed on what’s happened so far this year and what we have to look forward to is the Concept Metal Products quarterly news letter, Spring edition. With a special look at our Amada EML Punch / Laser Combination, our continued investment into the future with our apprenticeship scheme, and a personal chat with Andy Galvin our Maintenance Manager.

WORKING CHARGE HAND PAYS DIVIDENDS

At the start of 2011 Concept Metal Products put into operation a working charge hand.

Nick Brash who has been with Concept since 1995 is one of our most skilled and knowledgeable press brake operators. His key tasks as the new working charge hand is not only to enforce the day to day production schedule but also to play a key roll in the training of our apprentices.

Working along side Nick we hope will give the youngsters the best opportunity we can to teach them all the knowledge and experience required to eventually become one of our highly skilled operators.

Already since Nick started his new roll we have observed a more efficient production line, which we hope will lead to an even better service for all our customers.

The photos above are of some tapered beams that we are currently    forming at Concept Metal Products. Each of the 284No root beams are 8200mm long formed out of 4mm and 5mm S355. The beams are supplied fully fabricated with tapered end plates. Our 500 ton tandem press is the perfect machine for forming this job. Able to handle the length by two 4.1m press brakes operating together in tandem to provide 8.2m of bending capacity. For more information on our extensive bending capacity please contact us at sales@conceptmetal.co.uk

Amada EML Combination Punch / LaserThis month we take a look at the Amada EML punch / laser combination. This machine provides the ultimate flexibility without compromise.

With a 30 ton variable punching stroke it can provide a very impressive 1800 hits per minute for unsurpassed productivity.

Equipped with a 45 station Z style turrets for flexibility and reduced set up times. It also houses a 4kw laser providing quick speed laser cutting, meaning that no shape or profile is too complex.

With a bed size of 7000mm x 1800mm it nicely compliments or impressive long length bending capacity. The bed is also fitted with a floating brush table to prevent any punch down forms from catching on dies, ensuring a good finish to all produced parts.

The EML punch / laser can operate on plate up to 6mm thick meaning that it is very quick at processing sheet metal items that contain perforations or areas with multiple apertures.  This machine provides Concept with a greater precision profiling capacity suitable for processing thin sheet work allowing our 4kw and 6kw bystronic bystar lasers to concentrate on the thicker profiling, with the maximum that we can process being 25mm thick in both stainless steel and mild steel.

Adam, at age 15, completed a work placement at OTC in the Engineering Workshop. He achieved a Distinction in BTec First Diploma in Engineering at Middleton Technology School. He then applied to OTC for an Apprenticeship in Engineering.

Adam started employment at Concept Metal at the aged of 16 and began his apprenticeship programme within 3 month working towards L2 Fabrication & Welding. He completed this after 12 months. After achieving the Level 2 he started an Advanced Apprenticeship in Fabrication & Welding Level 3.

He has just completed and achieved his NVQ Level 3 (age 19) within 12 months of starting the qualification and currently 70% through his City and Guilds Certificate in Engineering. Adam has also secured contracts for Concept Metal based on his skills and dedication to the job. Adam is trained at Oldham Training Centre (OTC)

GM Dean Barnard says “Adam has fetched an array of hope in showing the skill levels he has achieved”. Dean goes on to state, “I gained my apprenticeship in structural and thick plate engineering, learning from some very skilled men with traditional skills. I thought traditional skills were a thing of the past but OTC and indeed Adam have filled me with hope that manufacturing can survive”.

In addition to Adam there are 5 other apprentices at Concept all training in different areas of our industrial expertise. A quarter of Concepts workforce is under 19years of age, helping us to achieve a strong, skilled workforce for the future.
